Parnitha chase after casino hit

Police arrested 27 people after a six-hour chase through remote paths on Mount Parnitha, northwest of Athens, yesterday following an attack on the mountain’s casino by self-styled anarchists. Officers said some 30 assailants arrived at the Mont Parnes casino on motorcycles at around 9.20 a.m. and proceeded to daub the building and parked cars with red paint. They also spray-painted messages demanding the removal of the casino from the mountain where a fire last month burned some 4,000 hectares of forest. The blaze prompted the first public protest of its kind in Greece when several thousand people gathered in front of Parliament a few days later to demand better environmental protection policies. Following yesterday’s raid, a police helicopter was sent to the area to help officers track down the assailants along remote mountain footpaths. Officers caught up with the 27 suspects near Thrakomakedones, at the foot of the mountain.
