Arrest fuels immunity row

A 19-year-old female student, arrested on Sunday following clashes between police and self-styled anarchists in Thessaloniki, was yesterday charged with a string of crimes and misdemeanors. The student, who allegedly hit an officer on the head with a metal club after police entered the grounds of the city’s Aristotle University, is to appear before an investigating magistrate on Thursday. Meanwhile, the university’s union of teaching and research staff expressed concern about police entering university grounds despite a ban on uninvited police access. The union questioned the alleged assertion by a local prosecutor that «university immunity does not apply at night» and demanded a probe into whether police patrols had been adequate and whether arrests were made by plainclothes officers who had been on the campus. «In the first case, ineffective police measures are to blame, in the second, blatant violation of university immunity,» the union said.
