Three die after lover spurned

A 36-year-old Romanian man shot dead his ex-girlfriend and the driver of a car in which she was traveling late on Monday night before turning the gun on himself, police in Iraklion, Crete, said yesterday. The gunman lay in wait outside a house where the 26-year-old woman, also a Romanian national, was working as a maid. She was picked up by her new boyfriend, a 34-year-old man, who was a passenger in the car driven by 33-year-old Dimitris Stefanoudakis. Police said Stefanoudakis had never met the woman before. As they drove off from the house, the gunman opened fire on the driver and the woman at close range. Despite being shot in the chest, Stefanoudakis sped off and drove about 120 meters before crashing the car. The driver and the woman were pronounced dead at the scene. The woman’s 34-year-old boyfriend escaped the crash with minor injuries. The 36-year-old Romanian walked some 50 meters and then shot himself. Officers said he had been harassing his ex-girlfriend for some time after they broke up.
