Arsonists hit ministry as AFP attack claimed

Suspected anarchists used improvised explosive devices in arson attacks on two offices of the Environment and Public Works Ministry early yesterday, causing damage but no injuries. The first blast targeted the ministry’s office on Panormou Street at 3 a.m. and the second the ministry’s premises in the central district of Exarchia 25 minutes later. There was no claim of responsibility. Meanwhile, a group called Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire claimed responsibility for a similar arson attack outside the central Athens bureau of the French news service Agence France-Presse on Wednesday. A caller told the Eleftherotypia daily that the blast was «in solidarity with our French comrades.» Police handling the case say this may refer to the arrest in France last month of nine people believed to have sabotaged high-speed passenger train lines.
