Officer with laser held, others sued for abuse

An Athens policeman who allegedly sat in a parked car in central Exarchia early on Saturday and shone a laser light at riot police officers guarding the Culture Ministry offices faced a prosecutor over the weekend. Riot officers chased the policeman, who was not armed, and brought him in for questioning. He had been driving a car without license plates, police said without clarifying whether it was a police vehicle. Meanwhile in Thessaloniki a 22-year-old man has sued the city’s central police department, alleging that he was beaten in detention by officers who arrested him early on Saturday. The 22-year-old was held on charges of insulting a police officer and resisting arrest. There were no details about the alleged assault. Last month the government heralded the creation of a committee of psychiatrists to monitor police officers.
