Iraqi terrorist suspect held

An Iraqi man who has been in police custody in Athens since February, when he was detained trying to enter the country without the necessary paperwork, is thought to have organized a number of attacks on US forces in Baghdad, sources told Kathimerini yesterday. The 46-year-old is being held at the Aliens Bureau on Petrou Ralli Street and claims to be a Palestinian who was born in 1972. However, sources said that US officials have informed the Interior Ministry that he is a wanted terrorist. The suspect, who has not been named, was allegedly responsible for organizing dozens of deadly attacks on American and local troops in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities. As a result, he is on both the Iraqi and US wanted lists. Sources said that the 46-year-old had been under surveillance for a number of months before attempting to enter Greece. The Interior and Foreign ministries are handling the communication with Washington and Baghdad but it is not clear yet whether there will be an application for the suspect’s extradition.
