Man being held after horrific assault on wife

A 30-year-old Albanian woman was in intensive care yesterday after surgeons at Athens’s KAT hospital managed to reattach her hands and feet, cut off on Saturday in an alleged chainsaw attack by her 39-year-old husband. Police in the Peloponnesian town of Kalamata said they rushed to the woman’s home on Saturday afternoon, after the 39-year-old man, also an Albanian, stopped a patrol car and told officers he had severely injured his wife. The woman was found bleeding heavily. She was taken to a local hospital for emergency surgery and then flown to Athens for treatment. Police said the man had moved in with his wife last week, following a period of separation. The suspect, who allegedly purchased the chainsaw a few days earlier, was due to appear before a prosecutor yesterday. The couple’s children, aged 9 and 11, witnessed the attack and are receiving counseling.
