Euro MPs want Asopos action
Euro MPs yesterday called on Greece to move quickly to clean up the heavily polluted Asopos River, claiming that the presence in local water of high levels of hexavalent chromium was a «European problem.» Greece’s violation of European Union directives for clean water make the case of Asopos «a European problem… and a big problem,» said Monica Frassoni, co-chair of the European Green Party. Tuning into the debate in Brussels by video link, American secretary-turned-environmentalist Erin Brockovich, who sued a power firm in California after the discovery of hexavalent chromium in local drinking water, said the situation in Asopos required an «immediate solution.» Former Greek environment inspector Margarita Karavassili said the European Commission was calling on citizens with evidence about pollution in the Asopos to contact it, as it has no recent data about the state of the river’s water.
