Cabbies wait for green light to enter bus lanes

There is confusion about whether taxi drivers will be able to legally drive in bus lanes as of next Friday because the necessary paperwork has not been signed despite an agreement between the cabbies and the government earlier this month. Taxi drivers have been pushing for the measure for a number of years and the government used it as a bargaining chip in return for demanding that cabbies improve their behavior, although clear guidelines on how this will be assessed have not been set out. According to the agreement, taxis that are carrying customers would be able to enter bus lanes that are not in the center of Athens outside the hours of 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. However, the government has yet to give the official green light to the measure, which is opposed by transport experts and bus drivers.
