Spot checks in Athens in bid to fight crime
Three uniformed policemen and an undercover officer conduct a check on two migrants in central Athens yesterday. It was not clear why the two men were stopped but residents and shopkeepers in the center of the city have repeatedly called for more policing after seeing a sharp rise in crime over recent months. The presence of drug dealers, addicts and prostitutes has also contributed to a sense that the area around Omonia Square has been abandoned to its fate.
