An immigrant raises his fist during a protest rally in central Athens to mark May Day. Thousands joined rallies in the capital and in Thessaloniki to protest tax increases and large-scale redundancies. The Athens rallies were largely peaceful, though self-styled anarchists caused some problems in Thessaloniki. In Athens, workers’ strikes hampered public transport while dozens of flights and ferry departures were canceled.
