Path clear for revamp of National Garden

A deal was signed yesterday that will lead to a 7.5-million-euro project to redevelop the National Garden in the heart of the city later this year. The agreement was signed by Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis, Athens Prefect Yiannis Sgouros, who will provide the funding, and Yiannis Polyzos, the vice rector of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), which will conduct the study that is due to be ready by this fall. «The redevelopment will be carried out with material that is extremely environmentally friendly,» said Polyzos. «The lighting and all the other changes will be made with the aim of creating an accessible and welcoming garden.» When the project is completed, the National Garden will have a new fence, lighting, plumbing and a sewage system. A phone and security system will also be installed, while some buildings will be renovated and paths will be relaid.
