Leftist disquiet rumbles along
The outspoken leftist deputy Pericles Korovesis refused yesterday to stand down over comments suggesting that Synaspismos Left Coalition has accepted bribes as part of a deal for a state contract in 1990 when it was part of a coalition government. Synaspismos, the main party in the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), reacted to Korovesis’s comments earlier in the week by suggesting he should retract them or resign. But in a column in the Eleftherotypia newspaper, the MP refused and launched a scathing attack on Synaspismos leader Alexis Tsipras, who has recently been at odds with the head of SYRIZA’s parliamentary group, Alekos Alavanos. «The Synaspismos leadership has lost touch with reality,» he said, emphasizing that the party had not responded to the allegations. Alavanos, however, criticized Korovesis yesterday, saying he had made «a serious political mistake that hurts SYRIZA.»
