Man grew cannabis in middle of highway

Following his unusual use of public space, a 35-year-old man has been arrested in northern Greece for allegedly using a grassy median strip separating lanes on the Athens-Thessaloniki national road to grow cannabis plants. Police said yesterday that the suspect, from Katerini, was taken into custody as he drove to the traffic island to tend to his illegal crop. Officers said that they found 42 trees, between 1.50 and 1.80 meters tall, at the site. The man had allegedly been using the existing automatic-watering system to help nurture his harvest. Authorities also searched the man’s home, where they confiscated prescription drugs and a small amount of cannabis. The plants were uprooted and the 35-year-old was referred to a prosecutor.
