Runners follow in Pheidippides’ footsteps

Competitors in the 27th Spartathlon are seen through a large plastic tube on Saturday. Ryoichi Sekiya of Japan won the 246-kilometer race, completing it in just under 24 hours. Some 350 athletes from 33 countries took part in the race, which traces the footsteps of Pheidippides, an Athenian sent to Sparta in 490 BC to seek help against the Persians.
