Man fakes brother’s death for payout

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in the Peloponnesian city of Kalamata on suspicion of falsely claiming that his older brother was dead so he could claim 100,000 euros in life insurance. Police said that the 21-year-old, who was not named, submitted paperwork on August 24 apparently proving his 23-year-old brother had been killed. However, authorities later discovered that the certificate had been signed by a doctor who was killed in a car crash in 1994. Last Thursday, the 21-year-old returned to the registry office where he had submitted the forged certificate to obtain a copy of the document to hand to the local bank where his brother had taken out a 100,000-euro mortgage and life insurance policy. The suspect was arrested and was due to appear before a magistrate yesterday. His brother is being sought by police.
