Islet of Dokos

A worker sets about demolishing one of several illegally built structures on the small islet of Dokos, off the island of Hydra in the Saronic Gulf. The Prefecture of Piraeus took the initiative to raze the illegal buildings on the islet, which in 1994 was declared a protected area due to its many sites of archaeological significance dating from ancient times to the Byzantine era. Piraeus Prefect Yiannis Michas said that the initiative would be extended to illegal structures on the nearby island of Poros and then to parts of the Greek mainland. ‘Dokos is just the beginning,’ Michas said. Dokos accommodates about 50 legally built homes but only one of these is inhabited.
