Gang assaults AUEB lecturer

A lecturer at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) was attacked by a group of people who wanted to take over the theater where he was teaching students, it emerged yesterday. Gerasimos Sapountzoglou revealed that about 15 people who were not students at the AUEB entered the lecture hall on Wednesday and assaulted him when he refused to end his lesson so they could use the room. Police also reported that patrol cars passing outside the university came under attack both yesterday and on Thursday from assailants who emerged from the AUEB’s grounds. No arrests were made. Academics at the university have asked the Education Ministry and other authorities to intervene to restore order and ensure the security of staff and students on campus. «The state has to begin a coordinated effort,» a lecturer who wished to remain anonymous told Kathimerini. «The rector’s office also has responsibility but they are afraid, which is perfectly understandable.»
