Robbers kill security worker but get no cash

A 45-year-old security firm employee died in the hospital late on Saturday after being shot in the head by would-be robbers wielding assault rifles, who cornered him in a van outside a branch of the Jumbo toy store near Vari, southeastern Athens. According to police, four gunmen threatened the employee and two colleagues as they were getting into a van with the store’s takings on Saturday evening. When the workers refused to get out of the vehicle, the gunmen opened fire. One bullet pierced the van and hit the 45-year-old, who died a few hours later. The bullet shells found at the scene showed that the shots had been fired by Kalashnikov rifles and therefore had been able to penetrate the armored vehicle, police said. The gunmen were unable to enter the van, as the victim’s colleagues had locked it from the inside. They fled empty-handed on motorcycles.
