Cabbie-mugging pair caught in Thessaloniki

A couple believed to have been mugging taxi drivers in Thessaloniki were in detention yesterday after their latest holdup was thwarted, police said. The 40-year-old woman and the 29-year-old drama school student are alleged to have threatened the cabbie with a gun, which turned out to be fake, and demanded his takings. When the taxi driver drove into the middle of the road and indicated to other motorists that he was in trouble, the would-be robbers told him to pull over and paid the fare before fleeing. Members of the police’s Z Force motorcycle unit arrested the pair outside a nearby apartment block. In a similar incident on Monday night, a man threatened a taxi driver at knifepoint but fled empty-handed when the cabbie resisted. Police in Thessaloniki are still investigating the murder of a 32-year-old taxi driver found in his car with multiple stab wounds on Christmas Day.
