PAOK paints the title green

PAOK defeated soccer champion Olympiakos 1-0 in Piraeus last night, allowing Panathinaikos to increase its lead at the top of the Super League table to eight points, with 11 games left to play. A 20th-minute strike by new signing Edinho from an excellent through-ball by Vladan Ivic took PAOK level on points with Olympiakos in second place, in a game that ended amid loud jeering from the home fans directed at Olympiakos’s owner, Sokratis Kokkalis, as well as the players. PAOK also hit the post twice and could have won by a greater margin in this first match for Olympiakos after the sacking of coach Zico. A few hours earlier, Panathinaikos had drawn 0-0 at fourth-placed Aris, with the two goalkeepers stealing the show. The Greens still have a few tough fixtures ahead, though, as next Sunday they host AEK. Playing in front of its home crowd, AEK defeated PAS Yiannina 3-1 last night.
