City revamp on the cards

As reports emerged yesterday that the Environment Ministry is planning to tear down all promotional billboards illegally set up in the capital, the City of Athens launched a competition for the design of a new line of Athens park and street benches. According to sources, the plan is for all illegal billboards to be removed from roadsides and the facades of buildings. Billboards on roadsides are believed to have caused dozens of accidents, while those on buildings have been widely condemned as eyesores. Meanwhile City Hall heralded an initiative aimed at gentrifying the capital while stimulating creative talents. The international online competition Athens Bench Mark calls on designers, artists and citizens to submit proposals for a new city bench. The 50 most popular ideas are to go on display at Technopolis arts complex from April 26 to May before the winner is selected by the public in online voting.
