Sending the right signal

Those politicians who encouraged the unconditional acceptance of the demands put forward by the 300 illegal migrants made a huge error in judgment. First of all, they disregarded the fact that the campaign was organized by activists on the far left, people who hold that sit-in demonstrations and blackmail will bring them closer to their own political objectives. The instigators did not hesitate to use the hopeless people as a means to their own ends, while putting their lives in danger.

Finally, these activists are blind to yet another danger: If the Greek state were to make concessions to their demands, it would effectively become a magnet for further waves of illegal migrants.

Greece must send out the signal that it cannot shoulder the burden of more illegal migrants. As for the local activists, they should be made to understand that the law is equally applicable to all.
