The bitter taste of failure
The Greek people were left feeling bitterly disappointed following yesterday?s meeting of party leaders.
The prime minister came up with a number of different ideas, though he failed to show any determination. The leader of the main opposition New Democracy party again seemed absolutely terrified of committing to anything that may cost him votes and oblivious to that fact that, whether we like it or not, the only way ahead is tough reforms and measures, pushed forward through a common consensus.
The fact that no deal was reached is extremely dangerous. It is causing profound concern among our European peers who want to help us even though we keep ignoring their advice. It also bodes ill regarding the likelihood of an uncontrolled bankruptcy and the social unrest that would inevitably follow.
Maybe, after all, it would have been better if this meeting had never been called. It did the opposite of what it was aimed at: It revealed the bankruptcy of our political leadership and increased the sense of insecurity and uncertainty in Greece and abroad.
