One last chance to change

The country missed a major opportunity last week. For a moment it seemed there was a chance that the major parties would collaborate and form a coalition government. Unfortunately, small-time party politicking prevailed and the opportunity was lost.

Papandreou?s new government has no right to fail, because an entire country will default if it does. It has to work as a unifying emergency government, dare to drastically reduce the fat of the wasteful state instead of taxing individuals indiscriminately, and come up with immediate measures for development and employment. Its mission will prove no easy task.

Nevertheless, our partners want to help Greece, or perhaps wish to keep the country from committing suicide. Evidently, this is Papandreou?s and PASOK?s last chance to change direction, correct the first term?s tragic mistakes and avoid bankruptcy and the ensuing social and political chaos.
