What is really at stake

The coming vote is about more than just who will govern Greece. The dilemma, in fact, will be: Do we want the euro or a return to the drachma? Do we want Greece inside the core of EU nations, or out of it?

Greeks have every right to be angry at the politicians and the parties who have ruled Greece over the past 30 years. Endless lies, scandals and provocations have pushed people to their limits. Frustration is obviously fanned by the champions of the drachma and other opportunists. But the big majority of the people know better than that; and they have an unmatched survival instinct.

The pro-European mainstream parties have very little time to win back the trust of the voters. They will not succeed unless they recruit non-partisan cadres with experience, unless the present credible and pragmatic programs concerning growth, and unless they vow to make radical changes in the political system.
