Get in the Cabinet’s corner

Public opinion?s expectations are always high ahead of the formation of a new government. On Thursday they were even higher due to the critical situation the country is in. The public was expecting a true national salvation government, with the support of all participating parties and staffed by the best the country has to offer. These expectations were not entirely met.

There are certain people in the government who do enjoy prestige, as well as a number of capable politicians. Clearly, however, this is a product of both inter- and inner-party balances and compromises which are not in tune with the current situation.

PASOK is taking part solely through its leader?s personal choices, while Democratic Left is providing limited support. New Democracy is represented through various young or experienced politicians, though the key cabinet positions have gone to those who express all that is defined as old-party and anti-reformist.

Nevertheless, Antonis Samaras?s government needs everyone?s support as it is the country?s last hope if it is to avert disaster.
