Disregard for the rule of law

Extremists and hard-liners in Greece have no respect for the country?s democracy and laws.

In yet another example of disrespect for the law, a group of demonstrators has illegally tried to stop gold mining in Skouries, Halkidiki, citing environmental concerns about the project.

Protests continue in spite of a Council of State decision last month that gave the Canadian firm in charge of the mine the green light to dig at the site, in which is concluded that ?investment is very beneficial for the economy.?

If authorities chose to turn a blind eye to such dangerous phenomena, these will only multiply.

Everyone is free to have their objections about an investment or public project. But nobody has the right to ignore the decisions of the courts and the state, putting the lives of ordinary citizens and police officers at risk.

It?s time we put an end to habits that make Greece look like a lawless jungle and which, of course, discourage private investors who want to put their money in the country.
