The sensitive issue of energy

The Greek government’s handling of international interest in exploring for hydrocarbon deposits in the Aegean has so far shown that it is being cautious and that it is determined to protect the country’s national interests.

It is extremely important, however, that Greece’s energy prospects do not become the subject of internal political disputes because there is always a risk of the country being dragged into a dangerous situation if the issue gets out of hand.

Greece has paid heavily in the past for exaggerated populist sentiment and macho chest-thumping generated by domestic political concerns in regard to issues of foreign policy and defense.

That said, we must acknowledge that so far, the Greek state and the country’s politicians have displayed tact, good sense and a spirit of cooperation on such a delicate matter – and this is an attitude that should not change, because much is at stake here.
