ROSENBERGS EXECUTED: New York, 19 – At the precise moment that the sun set, the Rosenbergs (sentenced to death for espionage) were executed by the electric chair in Sing Sing Prison. The execution took place before the Jewish Sabbath began. Julius Rosenberg was executed first, at 2.06 a.m. Greek time and then his wife Ethel at 2.16 a.m. (…) Right up until the time of the execution, US President Dwight Eisenhower, Attorney General Herbert Brownell and judge Irving Kaufman were at their desks ready to order a reprieve should the two spies have decided to reveal the names of the Russian spies in the USA in order to save their own lives. VIRGIN AT THE BEAUTY CONTEST: At the Athinaion Cinema, a benefit screening of the film «The Shepherdess and the Virgin» is to be shown in aid of the restoration of the Kechrovounio Monastery on the island of Tinos. During the interval, the 11 finalists of the Miss Star Hellas 1953 contest will parade before the audience. Ticket prices have been set at 25,000 drachmas. The ball at which the winning beauty queen will be chosen is to take place at the Argentina on Saturday, June 27, under the auspices of the wife of the US Ambassador in Athens John Peurifoy. ON SIKELIANOS: «The Poetry of Angelos Sikelianos» is the title of a radio program hosted by Cleon Paraschos to be broadcast today at 6.30 p.m. The discussion will be accompanied by a reading of Sikelianos’s poems.
