A front against extremism
The Hellenic Police (ELAS) and the country’s intelligence services are doing their best to carry out their daily duties under very adverse circumstances.
If not for the work and dedication of a number of key figures, the situation could have been much worse. At the same time we should not allow the actions of a small minority of corrupt or extremist individuals to mar the overall image of these services.
Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias were right to adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward cases of lawbreaking within the contours of the force.
Regrettably, their efforts are being obstructed by some elements who would rather cover up the problems.
Greece’s conservative New Democracy party has traditionally been renowned for its strong patriotism as well as its clear separation from the far right. The prime minister only stands to gain by setting up a front against extremism.
