OPINION

Unconvincing battle cry

The main opposition’s obsession with calling on society to “rise up” against austerity has become nothing short of colorful and counterproductive, for itself more than anyone else.

Even though Greek society is being sorely tested by the economic crisis and the belt-tightening measures that have come with it, the overwhelming majority is not responding to SYRIZA’s calls for action. The people simply know that the nation is facing serious problems and that there are no magical solutions. They are focused on surviving on a day-to-day basis.

SYRIZA chief Alexis Tsipras has repeatedly called on students at the country’s schools and universities, as well as on citizens in general, to take to the streets and bring down the government. What he obviously hasn’t done yet is convince them that he has an alternative plan for governing the country and the money to bankroll such a plan.
