Time for hope, not fear
Many Greeks voted out of fear in the back-to-back 2012 general elections. They did so to keep the country afloat, in the eurozone and safe from calamity. Now, thanks to their votes and the efforts of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, those fears have abated.
Greece has won back its credibility, the economy is on the rebound and the risk of an eurozone exit has almost disappeared.
In the local elections in May, citizens will vote for New Democracy and other pro-European parties not out of fear but hope. The middle class, which has been crushed by taxation and the property market crisis, wants growth and a fairer distribution of the burden. The unemployed want to see new investments that will generate jobs and everyone wants to see meritocracy in the state.
Samaras has refuted many naysayers by achieving much that appeared impossible two years ago. The onus, however, is on him once more to bring hope.
