Scoring an own goal

The widespread and blatantly unrealistic errors in the calculation of the new single property tax, better known as ENFIA, has created a great deal of frustration for the Greek public.

Excessive taxation over the past few years has already pushed people’s tolerance to the limit. Now, seeing the conservative-led government introduce yet another tax without due consideration, people have every right to be angry.

The ineptitude of senior officials combined with pressure from deputies demanding exceptions from the tax for their political cronies and supporters has resulted in the monstrous construct that is ENFIA.

To be sure, the government eventually pledged to correct the mistakes and the injustices. It also declared that payment of the first installment will be rolled back by one month. However, the damage has already been done. The administration ended up scoring an embarrassing own goal that could have been avoided.
