Keeping a lid on populism

SYRIZA chief Alexis Tsipras is the latest victim of out-of-control populism. The opposition party’s most extreme factions, as well as the populist right, were enraged because he participated in a closed international forum.

At a certain point we must get over this idiotic approach with regard to local politicians taking part in such events. Greek politicians should always be present, figuring out what is actually happening in the international arena and defending – when necessary – the kind of Greek interests which we all agree with, irrespective of ideology.

This kind of reaction is the result of irrational and insuppressible populism, which has been greatly reinforced by SYRIZA.

While Tsipras did the right thing by going to Como, he would be well advised to try to contain the excessive populism of conspiracy theories and other extremes that have greatly damaged the country.
