Harmful habits

Politicians with any good sense should know that they must refrain from bandying about accusations against their political rivals if they do not have the necessary evidence to back up their allegations. Nor should they, for that matter, engage in sensationalist scare-mongering.

Regrettably, growing polarization in Greece’s political arena has pushed many politicians to making groundless allegations without a shred of proof.

It goes without saying that this kind of opposition undermines the country’s institutions and works against the interests of our democracy.

Division and extreme behavior have taken a hefty toll on the country in the past. We must make sure we do not repeat the mistakes made in Greece during previous times of turbulence.

All sides must exercise restraint and put the brakes on over-the-top statements and actions.
