Myopic partisanship

The past few days have shown that some people inside Greece’s main leftist opposition party do in fact seem to grasp just how critical a position the country finds itself in right now and the need to forge at least a minimum consensus with the conservative-led government on key national and economic issues.

As usual, the effort is being torpedoed by the narrow-minded partisan posturing of the most parochial elements inside SYRIZA. Intoxicated by the prospect of political power, some politicians are behaving irresponsibly and resorting to polarizing discourse.

It is hard to understand their haste, particularly given their party’s lack of preparation and in some cases poor understanding of what is truly at stake.

If anything, the past few years should have driven home the point of the risks involved in ruling this country.
