Dangerous experiments

While education is a particularly crucial sector in any country, the current coalition government of leftist SYRIZA and the right-wing Independent Greeks does not appear to be treating it all that seriously.

The war on excellence was soon followed by government announcements regarding the abolition of model schools and university councils responsible for overseeing the running of tertiary institutions, as well as the merging of universities and technical colleges, among others.

What all of this points to is a lack of seriousness, sketchiness and, most of all, an obsession with playing out ideological rigidity.

The field of education was the one sector in which genuine consensus was reached at a certain point in time.

Now the entire sector is at risk of turning into a field of dangerous experimentation, of the kind aimed toward a downward equation reaching the lowest common denominator.
