HUMOR: First page commentary by Kathimerini – «According to reports, the outlaw leader Kouvaras is circulating in the Alymyro area disguised as a woman. Kouvaras is the last of the red liberators. The gendarmerie has already pinpointed his hiding places and, no matter where is he is, they will arrest him. Yet why are the police going to so much trouble? Why don’t they just let him know that they have received the latest collection by Christian Dior? For the outlaw leader to be wearing women’s clothing, he must be very interested in the latest fashions as a way of ridding the country of monarcho-fascism.» TRAM ACCIDENT: Fifteen-year-old Michalis Iliou, who was riding while holding onto the left-hand side of a tram on the Kolokynthous line, was struck by a passing car and killed. COUNTERFEIT SOVEREIGN: Volos, 23 – C.P., a grocer from Skiathos, as he was about to step onto a bus in Athens to return to Volos, was stopped by a stranger who pretended to have found a gold sovereign on the ground in front of him. The trickster sold him the sovereign for 150,000 drachmas as his share of the «find.» The unfortunate grocer found out too late that the sovereign was a gilded shilling, valued at about 4,000 drachmas. He has reported the incident to the police. GOLD SOVEREIGN: At the close of trading on the stock exchange today, the price of the gold sovereign stood at 302,000 drachmas.
