Worrying signs in ruling party

Statements made by certain high-ranking SYRIZA officials during the party’s central committee assembly on Saturday are a source of concern.

It has become blatantly clear by now that a significant number of SYRIZA officials, deputies and ministers do not accept the governance framework dictated by the country’s European Union membership. This is a situation that can no longer be ignored.

In practical terms this means that no matter what kind of deal is reached with Greece’s partners and creditors, it will probably be impossible to implement it and that a powerful group will carry on pushing for a rift and a return to the drachma. While these positions might not reflect the party majority, they are expressed by highly influential and powerful officials.

The big question now is how those backing a rift with Europe will react when the moment of truth arrives and a first honorable compromise reaches the table.
