Facing facts
The draft agreement presented to the government in Athens by the country’s creditors contains some painful fiscal measures as well as necessary reforms. Unfortunately, the fiscal gap has widened as a result of the uncertainty that has prevailed since the election on January 25 and because of the government’s indecisiveness.
Once more, the cost of the political system’s inadequacies will come to burden Greeks who work and pay their taxes.
However, the plan also includes reforms that are absolutely essential and must be implemented. What it is missing is a firm commitment by the creditors for a debt reduction to come with the next bailout package in the fall.
Meanwhile, the economy has hit rock bottom and the market, banks and businesses cannot take any more strife.
The time has come for Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to tell the people the truth, particularly those in his party. Every prime minister who came before him since the start of the crisis has paid for their irresponsible rhetoric. Now it is Tsipras’s turn to weigh his words.
