OPINION

Just in time?

It’s high time the government looked seriously at ways to tackle the huge refugee and migrant crisis that is testing the country.

Sure, this is an unprecedented phenomenon and an enormous challenge for everybody. However, when it first started to make an appearance more than a year ago, the government was unforgivably lax about getting a sense of its magnitude and also later showed itself to be entirely lacking in coordination and organization.

This mess has given Northern Europeans yet another excuse to point the finger at Greece and seek its physical isolation from the rest of Europe.

Given the crisis itself and the reactions it is stirring, it is critical that Greece does everything in its power to show that it can protect its borders and at least know who’s coming in and out of them.

Let us hope that the current flurry of activity, though sorely overdue, will bring results.
