Historical irony

There was great historical irony in last night’s debate in Parliament ahead of the vote on changes in taxation and social security, when Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras accused opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis of allegedly turning the main opposition, New Democracy, into a protest party.

Tsipras wanted to portray his government as the responsible voice in the country’s politics but the memory is still very fresh of the irresponsibility, the adventurism, the role that the ruling SYRIZA party played in encouraging extreme behavior during the crisis.

The prime minister has a long way to go – as do his government and his party – before they can reach the point where they have the right to accuse anyone of lacking responsibility…

Unfortunately, aside from this irony, the government will also be responsible for the social explosion that will, undoubtedly, follow the absurd increase in taxation and social security dues that Parliament voted on last night.
