Too little, too late
The government says that it is concerned about potential developments with the refugee crisis in light of the growing tensions between Turkey and the European Union over the upheaval in the neighboring country following last month’s failed coup and the enforcement of a deal between the EU and Ankara to crack down on migrant smuggling across the Aegean.
However, the statements made by Alternate Defense Minister Dimitris Vitsas regarding plans to overhaul reception centers for migrants, or hot spots, on mainland Greece along with a plan for relieving the burden on the Aegean islands that have borne the brunt of the migrant influx toward Europe are really too little too late.
Clearly the hot spots that are currently in operation are inadequate and tourism on the islands most affected by the migrant influx has suffered a serious blow.
This is largely due to the inadequate response in tackling the refugee crisis. So who is responsible for the current state of affairs?
