Desperate measures

The pledges made Thursday by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras must be seen in the context of his efforts to retain the support of the social groups that brought him to power.

While refusing to impinge upon vested interests or push through reforms in Greece’s notoriously dysfunctional public sector, Tsipras went on to promise a bonus for low-income pensioners. The goal is the redistribution of incomes, as he himself said, even if that means squeezing the middle class further. At the same time, the leftist leader appears totally indifferent about the impact of all that on the real economy.

The question now is: How far are we from the next general election?
