Protecting tourism

Foreign tourist arrivals in Greece are expected to reach new heights this year. We need to be careful, however, because when it comes to such a precious commodity, the goal cannot always be just about increasing numbers.

When left uncontrolled, mass tourism and cheap cruises can soon wreak havoc on important destinations and destroy their allure for more discerning travelers.

There are already plenty of signs that Greece has reached the point where it needs to start setting limits on the number of visitors or tour buses that are allowed at popular sites and destinations.

The state, local government and representatives of the sector need to sit down and draw up an action plan before it’s too late.
