KARAMANLIS PROJECTS: At 11 a.m. on Sunday, Prime Minister Field Marshal Alexandros Papagos inaugurated a project that will transfer the waters of Yliki Lake to Marathon to boost the water supply to Athens, Piraeus and the surrounding area. The ceremony was attended by the public works minister, Mr Constantine Karamanlis, and senior ministry officials, the ministers Georgios Rallis, Nikolitsas, Koundouros, Gonis, Theofanopoulos, Voyiatzis and others. After a blessing by Bishop Nikodimos of Thiva and Livadia, Mr Karamanlis made a speech emphasizing the fact that the problem of water supply that had plagued Athenians for a number of years had become much more acute in postwar years, with the result that Athens often suffered from water shortages. He said the government had taken the problem from «the sphere of the metaphysical, where it had been relegated by years of debate, to the sphere of reality» by carrying out this project, for which it guaranteed finances. Karamanlis also said the expansion of the water supply network would proceed at a rapid rate throughout the Athens area.
