CYPRUS: Nicosia, 14 – The police chiefs (of the British colonial regime) of Nicosia, Limassol and Paphos today refused to grant a permit for a public celebration on Sunday (January 16) to mark the fifth anniversary of the Cypriot referendum on Union (with Greece) held under the aegis of the Church. This was announced today in Nicosia without any reference to the reasons for the refusal. In Nicosia, the leader of the movement for unification, Archbishop Makarios, announced that the celebration will take the form of a liturgy. ENTANGLED INTERESTS: Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Mr Panayiotis Kanellopoulos has called for a clarification that statements attributed to him in an afternoon newspaper had simply been in the form of a casual conversation with members of the press and did not express the intention, as had been interpreted, to suggest that the prime minister legislate relations between press representatives and the government. MOUNTAIN POPULATIONS: Deputy Trade Minister Mr Taliadouros has announced that consideration is being given to having the value of wheat credits to mountain populations paid in the form of labor carried out on various regional projects.
