MASS TEACHER RESIGNATION: The growing struggle by high school teachers to improve their financial position has entered a new phase. The high school teachers’ federation (OLME) yesterday posted 20 packages (as many as there are education regions) containing the resignations of 4,100 of the total 5,157 high school teachers (500 did not submit resignations, 200 were on sabbatical leave and 350 were either ill, fulfilling their military service or completing other obligations). According to an announcement from OLME, the resignations did not mean a cessation of lessons, but a warning to the government (of Alexandros Papagos) that the teachers are determined to fight for their rights. CHURCH AND KAZANTZAKIS: The Holy Synod has sent its ruling on the writer Nikos Kazantzakis’s works «Christ Recrucified» and «The Last Temptation of Christ» to the Ecumenical Patriarchate to await its decision, since the author, as a native of the island of Crete, comes under the Patriarchate’s jurisdiction. Professor Alexandros Svolos, referring to the decisions by the Holy Synod, has condemned the prosecution of works of art and intellectual property.
