JANUARY 25, 1952

COURT RULING: Yesterday, the Attica and Islands Supreme Military Administration (ASDAN) commander issued a ruling and the military court adviser issued his report on the events of May 30-31, 1951 and the activities of the military organization IDEA. The ASDAN ruling, which commits 16 senior officers to trial, was not, on some points, in keeping with the adviser’s report. AMNESTY: The signing of a decree granting an amnesty to the officers involved in last May’s events and the publication of the decree in the Government Gazette terminates the government-provoked upheaval in the military. EDA: Yesterday evening, Interior Minister Rendis had a meeting with the police chief, Mr Paopoulos, who drew his attention to evidence related to the anti-nationalist activities of officials in the United Democratic Left (EDA). As Mr Rendis stated, a broad investigation is under way to determine the guilt of EDA members. GOLDONI: The theater director Mr Mouzenidis has begun rehearsals of a comedy by Goldoni to be performed at the Kotopouli Theater starring Mr Dinos Iliopoulos. Scenery and costumes are to be designed by G. Anemoyiannis. Also participating will be Kakia Panayiotou, Anna Synodinou, Ann Ratsou and Messrs Alexandrakis, Vokovits, Vandis, Kazis, Olympios and Nezos. «Based on the information we have seen in the international press and non-governmental organizations, we have determined that the conditions of detention of those prisoners amounts to torture,» Dr Maria Piniou-Kalli, president of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT), declared yesterday.
